Hazelwood Community Plan Development

Mass Economics partnered with Gensler to create a Community Plan for the Hazelwood neighborhood in Pittsburgh. Hazelwood is adjacent to the Hazelwood Green site – a 178-acre former industrial site currently being redeveloped as a mixed-use community with innovation and technology aspects. Mass Economics was tasked with creating economic development recommendations for the Hazelwood neighborhood that would connect residents and local businesses to emerging opportunities at Hazelwood Green. To complete this work, Mass Economics analyzed entrepreneurship trends, business support organizations, and job trends and clusters, and performed peer city comparisons and housing dynamics mapping. From this analysis, Mass Economics developed recommendations to stabilize and grow small businesses in Hazelwood, to support and grow local business-to-business service providers, and to maximize resident opportunities associated with Hazelwood green.
